As consumers become increasingly aware of the impact their personal choices have on the environment, sustainable packaging is becoming more important. A survey conducted by Mintel revealed that 72% of consumers feel that each person has an obligation to preserve and protect the environment, and that 67% of consumers believe packaging should be recycled.
There has been a dramatic increase in number of bar soaps packaged in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified unit cartons. In fact, the number doubled between 2013 and 2014. The FSC’s mission is to “promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests”. They verify that the wood used to produce products using the FSC logo is responsibly harvested.
Until now, the use of FSC certified packaging has mostly been driven by a company’s own sustainability initiatives, but recently consumers have become more aware of the Forest Stewardship Council and they are beginning to look for it at retail.
